Visit Santa Fe College Zoo

July 29, 2019 by Corey A Edwards

Santa Fe College ZooGainesville is home to a variety of attractions but, for animal lovers, the Santa Fe College Zoo may be one of the more interesting. It’s the only zoo on a college campus in the country!

Because this is a teaching zoo, you won’t see lions, gorillas, rhinos, or other big animals. The facility is restricted to animals approved for teaching purposes. Luckily, this still means a diverse collection of exotic and beautiful animals to visit.

In fact, Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo is home to more than 200 different animals from over 75 different species, including mammals, amphibians, birds, reptiles, and even invertebrates. Visitors can expect to see ocelots, lemurs, armadillos, parrots, eagles, alligators, and tortoises, among others. The zoo is home to many rare and endangered animals.

Santa Fe Zoo at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, FLThe Santa Fe Zoo is a small, AZA-accredited, teaching zoo on the Santa Fe College campus in Gainesville, FL. It is the only college zookeeper training facility in the country with its own AZA-accredited zoo on grounds.

The Santa Fe Zoo may sound like it belongs in New Mexico but no, it’s here in North Central Florida at Gainesville’s Santa Fe College. The facility’s full name is “The Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo” and it has been AZA accredited since 2000.

The 10 acre zoo is part of the Santa Fe College campus and home to over 200 animals representing more than 75 species. The zoo is almost completely operated by students, overseen by a small staff.

For many years one could only see the zoo via guided tour appointment. Though tours are still offered (and recommended) they are no longer needed to visit the zoo.
