Two or three steps into Kanapaha Botanical Gardens and you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to a different world. An amazing and beautiful world of incredible plants, flowers, bridges, waterfalls, and bamboo forests.
Kanapaha Botanical Gardens in Gainesville is home to Florida’s largest public bamboo gardens, the largest herb garden in the Southeast, and so much more. The gardens were named after nearby Lake Kanapaha, which was once home to a Timucuan Indian village. “Kanapaha” comes from the Timucua words for “palmetto leaf” and “house,” referring to the thatched dwellings the Timucua lived in.
The 62-acre facility contains 24 major collections gathered into a variety of different gardens. There is a Cycad Garden, a Ginger Garden, Water Gardens, Hummingbird Garden, Rock Garden, and more. In fact, Kanapaha is home to Florida’s largest public bamboo gardens as well as the largest herb garden in the Southeast!
