Kanapaha Botanical Gardens have been attracting nature lovers since opening their doors in 1986 – and no wonder! The lush 62-acres feature a collection of 24 different gardens, including Florida’s largest public bamboo display. Kanapaha is also home to the largest herb garden in the Southeast. Some of the garden’s most popular attractions include the stand of Chinese royal bamboo mentioned above, giant Victoria water lilies, and Asian snake arums.
As you can imagine, the gardens attract a lot of wildlife as well as human visitors. This is especially true in the Water Gardens and, of course, the Hummingbird Garden. Heron, alligator, butterfly, hummingbird, and a great many others enjoy the quiet beauty of Kanapaha Gardens.
There’s no bad time to visit the gardens but June through September offer the most color and variety. This is especially true for those hoping to see the gigantic and otherworldly water lilies.
Kanapaha hosts a number of special events throughout the year, too. There are monthly guided tours, Moonlight Walks, a Bamboo Sale, Camellia Show, Paint Out, and more. The Moonlight Walk features live music, laser lights, and more than 1500 luminaria. The Kanapaha Spring Garden Festival is North Central Florida’s annual, premier horticultural event!
Picnic baskets and leashed dogs are permitted to the gardens during normal hours. Garden walkways are mostly wheelchair accessible with benches, gazebos, and rest stations available throughout the grounds. You’ll also find an arboretum, vinery, greenhouse, and gift shop to explore.
