Keystone Heights Airport, formerly Keystone Army Airfield, has a rich military history. It was an Army Air Corps air base training reconnaissance pilots during World War II. It also played home field for a squadron of fighter pilots preparing for the Normandy Invasion.
Consequently, a good part of the museum’s mission is to preserve this otherwise obscure corner of wartime history. The museum collection contains more than just airport history, however. A LOT more!
Their aircraft collection includes a Piper L-43 Grasshopper, a Douglas C-47 Skytrain, and a Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star. The museum also boasts a WWII bomb service truck, a Navy aircraft carrier shop tug, and a Ural motorcycle with sidecar.
Beyond the military aircraft and vehicles, Wings of Dreams also has a large collection of artifacts. Uniforms, tools, log books, manuals, and more tell the story of aviation, both civilian and military.
Fascinating and detailed exhibits at the museum focus on WASP history, WWII Subchasers, the Doolittle Raid, Heavy Bombers of WWII, and many other subjects.
The Wings of Dreams Aviation Museum focus doesn’t stop at our own atmosphere, either.
The collection includes some absolutely eye-popping items from NASA. There’s a Space Shuttle training simulator and another of the Hubble Telescope, both of which were used to train astronauts! The museum also has a Mission Control station from the Johnson Space Center and one of the space shuttle’s big, orange fuel tanks.
Wings of Dreams Aviation Museum has so much in their collection that they’ve outgrown their facility! A new, permanent museum is planned to take up 6.5 acres of the Keystone Heights Airport facility. The multi-phase construction plan includes a warbird restoration facility, and aviation museum and library, gift shop, restaurant, and more.
This doesn’t mean that you should wait to visit, however! There’s plenty to see and do at the museum right now. Your visit will only help to forward the expansion!
